Teaching Philosophy "Providing all students with the successful, enjoyable music education"
There is no occupation or beloved past time that did not start with a teacher and a student. The role of the teacher in our world today is crucial to the betterment of tomorrow. I became a music educator because music transcends culture, religion, and race. It is one of the few wonders of the world that all people can experience and share with those around them. I teach because I am passionate about music and desire to be a part of those moments where a student discovers their passion as well! Music is a unique art because of its rich connection to humankind's development and its ability to express what words cannot. It was once said by Gustav Mahler, "If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music". For so many people, music is an outlet and a means of therapy for when life grows tough as well as a catalyst for when times are good! I believe that all people have an innate appreciation for music-"but there is a critical difference between listening without context and listening with a foundation of musical knowledge"(Emma Burger). I teach to provide all students the opportunity to build a foundation of musical knowledge and explore their expressive abilities in a non-judgemental atmosphere. I believe that music has the power to change lives and therefore every piece of music should be a representation of the students attention to detail and personal expression. Whether music is being studied in theory, history, or applied skills, the ultimate goal is to share this knowledge with those around us. And, as the world grows, so do the means by which we educate students and share this knowledge. With the rapid development of technology, educators today will operate in a very different classroom environment from past educators. We, as current educators, need to meet the changing needs of these students. Providing an education that is supported by assistive technology is essential to a successful teaching environment.
